Prague has a very intense nightlife so everybody can find what they are looking for. Dance all night at one of Prague's many discos and music clubs, have a cocktail or beer at a bar, enjoy live music of all kinds …
Classical concerts, especially ensembles, are held all over the city throughout the year. Performances and recitals are held regularly at many of the city's palaces and churches, including the Garden on the Ramparts below Prague Castle and the Lobkowicz Palace at Prague Castle. Some of the best chamber ensembles are the Talich Chamber Orchestra, the Guarneri Trio, the Wihan Quartet, the Czech Piano Trio, and the Agon contemporary music group. In the Czech Republic, however classy, ‘nightclubs’ means a table dancing club, usually with a proper strip show and often even with a sauna and Jacuzzi. Clubs that feature live music are generally known as ‘music clubs’ or ‘jazz clubs’, while establishments that offer dancing are known as ‘discos’ or ‘dance clubs’.
Bars or lounges are not traditional Prague fixtures, but bars catering to a young, often foreign crowd have elbowed their way in. Still, most social life of the drinking variety takes place in pubs (pivnice or hospody), which are liberally sprinkled throughout the city's neighborhoods. Jazz gained notoriety under the Communists as a subtle form of protest, and the city still has some great jazz clubs, featuring everything from swing to blues and modern jazz. Gambling plays an important part in the lives of many Czechs and is big business in Prague, with new casinos opening all the time. The minimum age for gambling is 18 years and a passport or ID is required. Entrance fees are as high as Ke500 in some establishments. Casinos can be found in many of the luxury hotels, where evening dress is essential for admission.
Most of the best casinos are found on Na pøikopì and Vaclavske namìstí. Recommended venues include Casino Admiral Praha, Palace of Culture, 5 Kvetna 65, Prague 4, the 24-hour Casino Jalta Happy Days, Vaclavske namìstí 35, Prague 1, the VIP Club Casino, Hotel Ambassador, Vaclavske namìstí 7, Prague 1, and Casino Palais Savarin, Na poikopì 10. Tourist-friendly, nonverbal theater abounds as well, notably "Black Light Theater," a melding of live acting, mime, video, and stage trickery. Weekly listing (in English) of music events can be found in the Prague Post and the racier fortnightly Prague Pill. Do mìsta gives monthly nightlife listings in Czech.
